Description

Rare and exceptional piece from the late 1800s, the thistle design neck plate is of a slightly curved rectangular shape which can be worn with a satin or velvet ribbon of your choice, or have it fitted with fine seed pearl rows (the piece has the openings necessary for the pearl addition).

In the center a decoration of finely sculpted thistles, large flowers and foliage. The flowers are enameled a beautiful blue with translucent centers which are mauve and green. The foliage is enameled in shades of green, and it is enriched with colorless and brilliant-cut (TA) diamonds in the setting. The distinct stamp bearing L. Gautrait is visible in the back of this gorgeous piece.

Gautrait’s compositions have a distinctive ornamental character and show a preference for swung contours into which functional pieces, such as loops and fastenings, are fitted as is the case with this piece. Gautrait was highly skilled at creating bird pieces, and flower designs with densely colored petals and vibrant centers with enamel. The effect of finely chased gold and enamels is most obvious, while precious stones provide discreet accents. Work attributed to Gautrait is also notable for exceptional luminous enamel work. Most of the pieces created at Leon Gariod’s firm bear his signature “L. Gautrait.”

Yellow gold setting.
French work signed L. Gautrait, bearing his maker’s mark.
Lucien Gautrait (1865-1937)
