Description:

Sir Edwin Long (1829-1891) was a renowned British painter known for his historical and Orientalist artworks. Born in Bath, England, Long displayed exceptional artistic talent from an early age. He received formal training at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he honed his skills and developed his distinctive style.

One of Long’s oil paintings on canvas is “Ruth in the Fields of Pharaoh.” This large-scale measures 50×40″ and bears the artist’s signature. The painting portrays a pivotal moment from the biblical story of Ruth, where she accompanies her mother-in-law, Naomi, to the fields of Pharaoh to gather grain.

Long’s meticulous attention to detail and his keen eye for historical accuracy shine through in “Ruth in the Fields of Pharaoh.” The painting transports the viewer to the ancient era of Egypt, capturing the attire, customs, and architectural elements of the time. Long’s thorough research and commitment to authenticity allow the audience to immerse themselves in the biblical narrative, fostering a powerful connection to the story.

“The Guard of the Palace,” painted in 1887 – Fez “Morocco”- By Edwin Longsden

Long was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1870 and an academician (RA) in 1881. His pictures always attracted attention and his Diana or Christ? (1881) greatly enhanced his reputation at the time. His pictures suited the taste and appealed to the religious sentiment of a large portion of the public, and their popularity was increased by a wide circulation of engravings. He consequently determined to exhibit his next pictures in a separate gallery of his own in Bond Street, London and there in 1883, and the following years, his Anno Domini and Zeuxis at Crotona met with great commercial success.
