William Wallace Gilchrist Jr. He was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. Vacations were spent at Prout’s Neck, Maine where he received instruction from his close friend Winslow Homer. These were the most important artists working and teaching in America, during the last years of the 19th century. Our oil of a woman reading the morning news in bed, shows the intimacy and domestic bliss, which characterized this period of art.
