Thomas Doughty was one of the first Americans to paint purely landscapes. He was the dominant artist in Philadelphia until the arrival of Thomas Cole. In the 1830’s he made his way up into the Boston area where he painted with great success. Eventually, he found a welcome home in the New York City art community, traveling up into the Hudson Highlands. This oil is a major attempt to portray the beauty and silence of a cold winter night. It was done around 1830-1835, a great
period in the height of his talents.
